Vitamin D: the “sunshine” vitamin
Vitamin D is an essential nutrient that has many versatile functions within our body and plays a significant role in maintaining general health. These include nervous system functioning, gut health and the development, function and maintenance of healthy bones. However, most of us do not reach adequate levels of vitamin D through our everyday diet and lifestyle alone. Vitamin D insufficiency affects almost 50% of us.
Symptoms of vitamin D deficiency can be quite subtle.
Here’s what you should look out for:
– Fatigue
– Increased frequency of colds and infection
– Muscle weakness, aches or cramps
– Bone and joint pain
– Mood swings or chronic case of the blues
Whilst vitamin D is found in food items such as plants (vitamin D2), animals (vitamin D3), mushrooms and oily fish, sunlight is actually the best source! Being exposed to the sun for 15 to 20 minutes three days per week is sufficient (make sure you’re being sun safe!).
Put simply, we are basically saying: have Fun in the Sun this summer!
